IRTC

Borealis

This is my third entry into the IRTC. This round's topic was Night. Being a landscape kind of guy, I naturally had to create a nightscape... and mountains are a must. Mark, the guy who I've done the book covers for, suggested that I make a picture of an Aurora Borealis for his company's homepage. So, I experimented with various techniques and came up with a halo-filled height_field. It looked so good that I decided to add it to my IRTC entry at the last minute. I think it turned out rather well. The image placed 8th, out of 131 entries.

By the way, the forest in the foreground is actually another height_field with some sparse random noise spikes added to it. It is offset downward slightly from the 'snowy hills' height_field so only the 'trees' poke up through the snow. This effect works nicely if the image resolution is fairly low and nobody looks at it too closely. ;)

Feathers McGraw

This was my second entry into the IRTC, for the September-November '97 Arts & Entertainment round. I didn't have enough time to work on this picture because of massive schoolwork, so I had to submit it 'as is'. It didn't perform well, placing 22nd out of 80 (or so) entries. Feathers was modeled using sPatch, as was the chair and ottoman. The rest of the scene was modeled by hand, with the exception of the silhouette of the Techno-Trousers, which I drew (by hand) in Paint Shop Pro.

Shades of an Age

This is my first entry in the IRTC for the July-August '97 round, with the topic of Magic. It placed 7th overall out of 161 entries.
The unicorn was made with sPatch. Everything else was modeled 'by hand'. The design of the columns and architrave were based on designs found in Palladio's The Four Books of Architecture -- an excellent classical architectural reference for computer modellers. I highly recommend it.
