3D Space Sketch

This is an early sketch of what eventually turned out to be the 3D Space Scene image. Gotta love those descriptive comments.

Borealis Sketch

Here's my initial stab at the Borealis scene. The thing in the foreground-right was supposed to be a tree stump with a small lantern on it. I later decided not to get that close to the ground for the final scene, so the lantern was not attempted.

Dawn Sketch

Here's the original concept sketch for Dawn. As you can see, there's not much to it. ;) I did, however, end up mirroring my sketch. The final image has the planet on the right side and the sun on the left.

Feathers Sketch

This is a collection of some of the early concepts for my 'Feathers McGraw' IRTC entry. I never could model the rubber glove on his head properly, so it never made it to the final image.

Trim Sketch

This is a couple of profiles for the baseboard trim used in the 'Feathers McGraw' scene.

Moonscape Sketch

I originally set out to create an on-line tutorial during the creation of this scene. I also intended to add some kind of moonbase in the foreground. 3 years later, I finally posted the sort-of-complete image on my webpage.

Planetscape Sketch #1

My initial idea for the 'Planetscape Intro Picture #1' image included a planet with rings. Perhaps I use rings too much. They're terribly difficult to get right, though, so I usually delete them along the way.

Planetscape Sketch #2

The original concept for the 'Planetscape Intro #2' image utilized a very large planet in the foreground. After various attempts to get the shading right, I realized that the large planet competes for emphasis with the binary star, so I shrank the planet to give the binary pair the emphasis it deserved. The land forms in the foreground look a lot better in the final product, too. ;)

Shades Sketch

I made several test sketches for my 'Magic' IRTC entry Shades of an Age. The unicorn silhouette took a couple of tries to get right. The topmost sketch is a bit faded, but it depicts a glowing unicorn silhouette in the sky over a farm. I also decided to tackle an actual unicorn statue rather than going for the sword pictured on the left.

Space Sketch

And here's my first try at planning out the Space scene. I didn't bother drawing in the ships -- actually, I might not have even planned to put them in originally! I also decided not to pursue the binary star system in this image. There's a little bonus trigonometry going on in the bottom right corner of the sketch...
